Outlook promising for Eco Expo Asia 2022 as Hong Kong withdraws hotel quarantine

03 ottobre 2022

With compulsory quarantine in Hong Kong discontinued following the introduction of the ‘0+3’ policy, the picture looks increasingly rosy for Eco Expo Asia, which will take place from 14 – 17 December 2022 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The last day (17 December) will be open to the public and online services will run until 24 December. This year’s theme is “Green Innovations for Carbon Neutrality” with four main areas of focus at the fair.

Last week the Hong Kong SAR Government (HKSARG) ended compulsory quarantine on arrival with its new policy, allowing inbound travellers to conduct a PCR test on entry, without needing to wait at the airport for the results. Following this, arrivals will then need to undergo three days of self-monitoring, hence the policy has been called ‘0+3’. Under self-monitoring, they will receive an amber code on the government’s official digital tracing application, which will allow them to access public transport, attend work, as well as business-related events. 1

Ms Judy Cheung, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd commented: “We are very pleased with this development and what it means for large-scale business events in the city, as we now expect a higher number of international participants to attend this year’s show. The move is well timed for Eco Expo Asia, with countries around the world committed to various net-zero and carbon neutrality targets, the fair can once again act as a platform bringing together a wide range of industries to tackle the climate crisis.”

Four key topics to be explored at Eco Expo Asia 2022

Under the umbrella of “Green Innovations for Carbon Neutrality”, Eco Expo Asia 2022 will focus on the following four main topics:

Carbon neutrality

Both the HKSARG and the Chinese central government have vowed to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and 2060 respectively, and have implemented a variety of policies to achieve this. For example, the Government of Guangdong province announced a new plan for achieving its ‘dual carbon’ objectives in July 2022, aiming to increase the share of non fossil fuel derived energy in its total installed capacity from 48% to 54% between 2025 and 2030.2 In addition, the HKSARG will devote around HKD 240 billion (equivalent to USD 30.6 billion) in the next 15 to 20 years, to implement measures that mitigate climate change.3

Exhibitors from the air quality, eco-friendly product and green building and energy efficiency industries will showcase the latest products and technologies helping countries around the world to achieve their carbon reduction goals.

New energy

Wind, solar, hydrogen and other energy sources are growing destinations for investment by the Chinese government, with the country’s annual power generation from green energy sources set to reach 3.3 trillion kWh hours by 2025. Renewables are also expected to cover 50% of the country’s annual energy use increments.4

Leading industry players will gather at Eco Expo Asia 2022 to display cutting-edge new energy solutions.

Green finance and ESG

A total of USD 31.3 billion worth of green bonds were traded in Hong Kong last year, accounting for a third of all such bonds in Asia and cementing the city as the number one destination in the region.5

The government is also looking to allow carbon credits to be traded in the city and become a regional carbon trading centre within the Greater Bay Area.6

Leveraging Hong Kong’s position as a global financial centre, Eco Expo Asia will continue to host the Green Finance & ESG-related services thematic zone, which debuted last year. The zone will gather leading players in green financing, environmental research and consultation as well as environment-related media and publications.

Green transportation

In 2021, China became the largest electric vehicle market in the world and this year the market increased by nearly a third, with over 2 million units sold in August compared to the same period of the previous year.7

In Hong Kong, the government revealed its first roadmap for the popularisation of electric vehicles, setting out the timeline for eliminating the new sales of conventional fuel-powered private cars by 2035.8

The Green Transportation Zone at Eco Expo Asia will continue gathering leading brands within electric vehicles and related solutions, to help drive the sector forward.

Eco Expo Asia 2022 will take place from 14 – 17 December at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, with the online services running until 24 December. The fair is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and co-organised by the Environment and Ecology Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. For more information about the fair, please email ecoexpo@hongkong.messefrankfurt.com or exhibitions@hktdc.org, or visit www.ecoexpoasia.com. The government convention and exhibition industry subsidy scheme and SME export marketing fund by the HKSARG has also been renewed this year. This means exhibitors can enjoy 50% off their participation fee (subject to a cap of HK$10,000) per booth or up to HK$100,000 in subsidies overall should they decide to exhibit at Eco Expo Asia 2022. Please contact exhibitions@hktdc.org for details.
